A Peugeot 308 HDi featuring an EGC gearbox has come top of the Compact Car Class for the lowest CO2 emissions in the 2008 AA Energywise Rally staged in New Zealand, with a total emissions figure of just 106.03 g/km.

The 308 has also come first in its class for using the least amount of fuel, with an overall consumption figure of just 4.047 l/100km, which is more than 10% better than the official manufacturers combined cycle economy figure.

The 5th Peugeot Design Competition, whose theme was "Imagine the Peugeot of the future World Megalopolis", met with resounding success, with over 2,500 projects submitted by participants from 95 different nationalities.

The competition produced some excellent entries, and first prize was awarded to Carlos Tovar from Colombia, aged 25, for is ‘RD’ concept car. Second was Emre Yazici from Turkey with ‘Ego’ and in third place was Lou Ke from China with ‘Oxo’.

Peugeot will unveil a new 308 model at this year’s Australian International Motor Show, the luxurious and dynamic 308 XTS.

This new top of the range model will be powered by the 1.6 litre turbo-charged 128 kW petrol engine, previously found in the 207 GTi. Willing, responsive and highly flexible, the engine develops peak torque at only 1600rpm and is fitted with a new 6-speed manual gearbox. Well credentialed, the 1.6 turbo-charged engine has won its category two years running at the International Engine of the Year Awards.
